Lumbago

Causes ,symptoms and treatments

Lumbago can be define as a back lombalgie that is to say a backache above your buttocks with pain irradiation in you buttocks or around your thigh..Lumbago is related to a spine pathology like the scoliosis. The pain generating  from the lumbago seam to be acute with periods much or less painful.

Very common, lumbago does not always find a treatment that meets the expectations of a total cure. The management of lumbago is generally done by a general practitioner then a rheumatologist or a functional rehabilitation doctor or even a surgeon. Other specialists also contribute to the management of this disease: they are not only physiotherapists, but also osteopaths, acupuncturists, homeopaths, magnetizers and manipulators. The person responsible for pain in low back pain is the nucleus pulposus. This is the central nucleus of the cartilaginous disc located between each vertebra.

The vertebrae protect the spinal cord, a strategic nerve structure for communication through nerves between organs, muscles, skin and brain. When the intervertebral discs are damaged during certain movements, the nucleus pulposus then moves and causes significant inflammation in the region. This inflammation therefore causes the pain which is at the origin of the pain of lumbago. The greater the inflammation, the more excruciating the pain.

The main risk factors are the upright position of the Human Being which means that the weight of his body rests mainly on his vertebrae and when there is for example a vertebral malformation such as scoliosis; the forces are badly distributed and the back pain will be frequent. A previous trauma can also be at the origin of lumbago as well as sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, sitting with a round back, extra pounds and of course pregnancy. It is not uncommon to also see anxious people complaining of lumbago; the muscles are contracted especially those of the back, the neck and the shoulders.

Lumbago unfortunately has no age and can appear just as well in eleven-year-olds during poorly dosed, too intense or inappropriate physical activities, in young girls (hyperlordosis) or in adults. Lumbago is also very common in the elderly who present with spinal osteoarthritis or even osteoporosis.

To make a precise diagnosis of lumbago, it is necessary to know the patient's habits: profession, hobbies, sport, DIY, period of overwork and also the triggering factor namely muscular physical effort, trauma, overweight, bad spinal curvature and also the impact of pain on the patient's activities. Treatment for acute lumbago usually consists of a prescription for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The duration of treatment is a few days and is generally sufficient. Associated with this rest to facilitate healing. Sometimes cortisone injections into the intervertebral spaces may be necessary to overcome lumbago. Subsequently, the affected area still remains weakened and it is necessary to spare its spine in order to avoid recurrence; have the right gestures when lifting a weight, do regular physical exercises to strengthen the muscles of the spine and the abdominals and above all to avoid gaining weight. Finally, it is possible to wear restraint belts during handling efforts.
